Why Do the Godly Suffer? Romans 8:18 -- Dr. Ken Moore

Importance of Prayer

Proceed with much prayer, and your way will be made plain. – John Wesley

“Through the year with Wesley: an anthology”

Rev. Tony Soper, Pastor Emeritus, his wonderful wife Marguerite and Bob Griffiths (right to left)

A Prayer from John Wesley

O merciful Father, do not consider what we have done against you;

but what our blessed Savior has done for us.

Don’t consider what we have made of ourselves,

but what He is making of us for you our God.

O that Christ may be “wisdom and righteousness, sanctification and redemption”

to every one of our souls.

May His precious blood cleanse us from all our sins,

and your Holy Spirit renew and sanctify our souls.

May He crucify our flesh with its passion and lusts,

and cleanse all our brothers and sisters in Christ across the earth.

Amen.

Philippians 4:6-9 KJV

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

Starting Over

Importance of Prayer

I desired as many as could to join together in fasting and prayer, that God would restore the spirit of love and of a sound mind to the poor deluded rebels in America. John Wesley

“The Works of the Reverend John Wesley, A. M.”, p.476

Philippians 4:11-13

New English Translation

11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content in any circumstance. 12 I have experienced times of need and times of abundance. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of contentment,[a] whether I go satisfied or hungry, have plenty or nothing. 13 I am able to do all things[b] through the one[c] who strengthens me.

19 And my God will supply your every need according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers and sisters,[a] I do not consider myself to have attained this. Instead I am single-minded:[b] Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, 14 with this goal in mind,[c] I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God[d] in Christ Jesus.

About three in the morning as we were continuing instant in prayer, the power of God came mightily upon us, insomuch that many cried out for exceeding joy, and many fell to the ground. As soon as we recovered a little from the awe and amazement at the presence of His Majesty, we broke out with one voice, ‘We praise Thee, O God, we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord.’ – John Wesley

Methodist Resolutions & Beyond

Importance of Prayer

On every occasion of uneasiness, we should retire to prayer, that we may give place to the grace and light of God and then form our resolutions, without being in any pain about what success they may have. In the greatest temptations, a single look to Christ, and the barely pronouncing his name, suffices to overcome the wicked one, so it be done with confidence and calmness of spirit. – John Wesley

“The Works of the Reverend John Wesley, A. M.”, p.526

Luke 2:22-40

King James Version

22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

Jeremiah 31:32-34

English Standard Version

32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

A Covenant Prayer in the Wesleyan Tradition

I am no longer my own, but yours.
Put me to what you will, place me with whom you will.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be put to work for you or set aside for you,
Praised for you or criticized for you.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and fully surrender all things to your glory and service.
And now, O wonderful and holy God,

you are mine, and I am yours.

The Words that Changed the World -- Sunday Morning & Candlelight Service

Importance of Prayer

Thanksgiving is inseparable from true prayer; it is almost essentially connected with it. One who always prays is ever giving praise, whether in ease or pain, both for prosperity and for the greatest adversity. He blesses God for all things, looks on them as coming from Him, and receives them for His sake- not choosing nor refusing, liking or disliking, anything, but only as it is agreeable or disagreeable to His perfect will. – John Wesley

Deuteronomy 10:17-19

Lexham English Bible

17 For Yahweh your God, he is God of the gods and Lord of the lords, the great and mighty God, the awesome one who is not partial,[a] and he does not take bribes. 18 And he executes justice for the orphan and widow, and he is one who loves the alien, to give to them food and clothing. 19 And you shall love the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

He is our Joy!

Importance of Prayer

God’s command to “pray without ceasing” is founded on the necessity we have of His grace to preserve the life of God in the soul, which can no more subsist one moment without it, than the body can without air. – John Wesley

Acts 4:13-22

New English Translation

13 When they saw the boldness[a] of Peter and John, and discovered[b] that they were uneducated[c] and ordinary[d] men, they were amazed and recognized these men had been with Jesus. 14 And because they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say against this.[e] 15 But when they had ordered them to go outside the council,[f] they began to confer with one another, 16 saying, “What should we do with these men? For it is plain[g] to all who live in Jerusalem that a notable miraculous sign[h] has come about through them,[i] and we cannot deny it. 17 But to keep this matter from spreading any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more[j] to anyone in this name.” 18 And they called them in and ordered[k] them not to speak or teach at all in the name[l] of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied,[m] “Whether it is right before God to obey[n] you rather than God, you decide, 20 for it is impossible[o] for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.” 21 After threatening them further, they released them, for they could not find how to punish them on account of the people, because they were all praising[p] God for what had happened. 22 For the man, on whom this miraculous sign[q] of healing had been performed,[r] was over forty years old.

1 John 2:3-11

Lexham English Bible

3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 The one who says “I have come to know him,” and does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in this person. 5 But whoever keeps his word, truly in this person the love of God has been perfected. By this we know that we are in him. 6 The one who says that he resides in him ought also to walk[a] just as that one walked.

7 Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the message which you have heard. 8 Again, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in him and in you, because[b] the darkness is passing away and the true light already is shining. 9 The one who says he is in the light and hates his brother is in the darkness until now. 10 The one who loves his brother resides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

1 Corinthians 8:9-13

Lexham English Bible

9 But watch out lest somehow this right of yours becomes a cause for stumbling to the weak. 10 For if someone should see you who has knowledge reclining for a meal in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, because it[a] is weak, be strengthened so that he eats the food sacrificed to idols? 11 For the one who is weak—the brother for whom Christ died—is destroyed by your knowledge. 12 Now if you[b] sin in this way against the brothers and wound their conscience, which is weak, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat forever[c], in order that I may not cause my brother to sin.

The Sermon on the Mount: Taking Oaths

33 “Again you have heard that it was said to the people of old,[a] ‘Do not swear falsely,[b] but fulfill your oaths to the Lord.’[c] 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all, either by heaven, because it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, because it is the footstool of his feet, or by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great king. 36 And do not swear by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black. 37 But let your statement be ‘Yes, yes; no, no,’ and anything beyond these is from the evil one.[d]

Matthew 24:4-27

New English Translation

4 Jesus answered them,[a] “Watch out[b] that no one misleads you. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’[c] and they will mislead many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. Make sure that you are not alarmed, for this must happen, but the end is still to come.[d] 7 For nation will rise up in arms[e] against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines and earthquakes[f] in various places.[g] 8 All[h] these things are the beginning of birth pains.

Persecution of Disciples

9 “Then they will hand you over to be persecuted and will kill you. You will be hated by all the nations[i] because of my name.[j] 10 Then many will be led into sin,[k] and they will betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will appear and deceive[l] many, 12 and because lawlessness will increase so much, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the person who endures to the end will be saved.[m] 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole inhabited earth as a testimony to all the nations,[n] and then the end will come.

The Abomination of Desolation

15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation[o]—spoken about by Daniel the prophet—standing in the holy place” (let the reader understand),[p] 16 “then those in Judea must flee[q] to the mountains. 17 The one on the roof[r] must not come down[s] to take anything out of his house, 18 and the one in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. 19 Woe[t] to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! 20 Pray[u] that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great suffering[v] unlike anything that has happened[w] from the beginning of the world until now, or ever will happen. 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. 23 Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’[x] or ‘There he is!’ do not believe him. 24 For false messiahs[y] and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 Remember,[z] I have told you ahead of time. 26 So then, if someone[aa] says to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’[ab] do not go out, or ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe him. 27 For just like the lightning[ac] comes from the east and flashes to the west, so the coming of the Son of Man will be.

Divorce

31 “It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a legal document.’[a] 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for immorality,[b] makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Matthew 4:8-11

Lexham English Bible

8 Again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, 9 and he said to him, “I will give to you all these things, if you will fall down and[a] worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan, for it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”[b] 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and began ministering to him.

The Sermon on the Mount: Adultery and Lust

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’[a] 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 And if your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it from you! For it is better for you that one of your members be destroyed than your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it from you! For it is better for you that one of your limbs be destroyed than your whole body go into hell.
