Luke 9:57-62
New English Translation
Challenging Professed Followers
57 As[a] they were walking[b] along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”[c] 58 Jesus said to him, “Foxes have dens and the birds in the sky[d] have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”[e] 59 Jesus[f] said to another, “Follow me.” But he replied,[g] “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 But Jesus[h] said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead,[i] but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”[j] 61 Yet[k] another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say goodbye to my family.”[l] 62 Jesus[m] said to him, “No one who puts his[n] hand to the plow and looks back[o] is fit for the kingdom of God.”[p]
Luke 9:23-26
New English Translation
A Call to Discipleship
23 Then[a] he said to them all,[b] “If anyone wants to become my follower,[c] he must deny[d] himself, take up his cross daily,[e] and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life[f] will lose it,[g] but whoever loses his life because of me[h] will save it. 25 For what does it benefit a person[i] if he gains the whole world but loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed[j] of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person[k] when he comes in his glory and in the glory[l] of the Father and of the holy angels.
Apostles' Creed
United Methodist Hymnal
Traditional Version
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;*
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic** church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
